World-model startup Odyssey has raised a US$310m Series B at a US$1.45bn valuation, led by Natural Capital with participation from Amazon, GV, AMD Ventures, EQT and IQT. Co-founder Oliver Cameron announced the round on 17 June.

The pitch traces directly back to self-driving. Cameron, who founded Odyssey in 2023 with a team of autonomous-vehicle veterans, argues the same systems that learned physics, causality and human behaviour from the roadway can generalise into a new class of foundation model. Odyssey says it is approaching "the GPT-3 moment for world models." The capital comes with infrastructure attached: AWS becomes its preferred cloud, and Odyssey will work with Amazon's Annapurna Labs to optimise its models on Trainium chips.

It is one of the larger bets yet that world simulation, not language, is the next foundational layer for robotics, gaming and defence. Whether the GPT-3 analogy holds depends on a product the field has not seen yet.
