Microsoft's updated Terms of Use for Copilot now explicitly label the AI assistant as designed for "entertainment purposes only." The fine print warns users not to rely on it for "important advice." This is the same company that has spent the past year pushing Copilot into Windows 11, Office 365, and just about everywhere else as a productivity essential. Microsoft's Copilot brand now covers 75 different products. The gap between the marketing and the legal disclaimer is hard to ignore.

These entertainment clauses aren't unique to Microsoft. xAI's terms include nearly identical language. They're liability shields plain and simple. AI models make things up, and when a coding bot's urgency problem causes a bad output, someone has to pay. The terms make clear that someone won't be Microsoft. Air Canada found this out the hard way when its chatbot hallucinated a refund policy and the airline was held liable. These disclaimers are how companies try to avoid that fate.

Pay for Copilot for Microsoft 365, though, and the legal picture shifts. Enterprise contracts include Microsoft's Customer Copyright Commitment, which covers you against copyright lawsuits from AI outputs. Your data also stays out of training sets. Free users get "entertainment only" and zero guarantees. Legal accountability costs extra.
