Most users never touch Google's precision tools. But they're still there. Verbatim mode (buried under Tools > All Results > Verbatim) stops Google from paraphrasing your query and strips personalization. AI-native search engines like Perplexity and You.com take a different approach. They don't really support command-line style operators. But they lack granular control over source selection. An LLM might ignore your exclusion logic if it thinks a "helpful" answer requires pulling from a domain you tried to filter out. Google's quotation marks guarantee exact matching. AI engines rewrite your query to find semantic matches. True verbatim search becomes nearly impossible.

The gap matters for anyone building or using AI agents. Deterministic control over information retrieval is still valuable. Google's operators provide it even as the company pushes toward AI-mediated answers. Users who develop search precision can find information independently. They don't have to accept whatever algorithmic summary gets served. For the agent space, this is a reminder that old tools sometimes outperform new ones.
